Create a Shikaku practice set in 3 steps

1

Choose a complete preset

Start with guided, classroom, progressive, or low-ink practice.

2

Review the exact pages

Inspect puzzle pages, answer pages, paper, density, and page count.

3

Print or download

Use browser Print or vector PDF after the current preview is ready.

Choose the right level of support

Guided first puzzle

Print one real 4×4 puzzle with the area key and an exact answer page.

Light teacher prompts

Use short rules and the area key while learners explain factor pairs aloud.

Independent practice

Choose a same-level set and keep the exact answers separate for later checking.

Progressive challenge

Use the real eight-puzzle preset to move from 4×4 toward supported 6×6 reasoning.

Ways to use Shikaku

Whole-class area lesson Model factor pairs and one forced rectangle before learners begin their own page.
Small-group maths Let learners compare candidates and explain which rule removes one.
Home practice Send a low-ink set home and keep the answer pages with the adult.
Independent challenge Use a same-level or progressive set after the learner can explain the rules.

Printing and teaching tips

  • Print at Actual SizeConfirm A4 or US Letter and keep browser scaling at 100% before preparing a full set.
  • Match ink to the settingUse Color for guided display, Low ink for homework, or Black and white for copying.
  • Keep answers separateGive learners the puzzle pages first and reserve the exact answer pages for checking.

What this activity practises

Multiplicative area

Width × height becomes a visible relationship instead of an isolated formula.

Constraint reasoning

Each rectangle must satisfy several rules at the same time.

Sustained focus

Learners scan clues, compare candidates, and finish a complete partition carefully.

Use each printed puzzle in three steps

Observe clues and factor pairs

Choose a promising number, then list the widths and heights that could make its area.

Solve one rectangle at a time

Draw only rectangles that stay inside the board, contain one clue, and do not overlap.

Check the completed partition

Confirm every cell is covered once, then use the exact answer page only after solving.

Shikaku questions

What age is Shikaku for?
Children who are beginning multiplication and area can start with the 4×4 First Steps level. Younger learners can treat each clue as a count of squares.
Can one rectangle contain two numbers?
No. Every rectangle contains exactly one clue, and its area equals that clue.
Does a larger board always mean a harder puzzle?
No. Difficulty also depends on candidate counts, forced starts, reasoning techniques, and dependency depth.
Does Hint fill the answer for me?
No. Learn and Standard explain first. A reveal shows only one next logical rectangle and does not add it to your answer.
Are the printable answers the same puzzles?
Yes. Puzzle pages and answer pages are rendered from the same exact definitions in one document plan.
